A. Verner, Bucks County Longrifle, .50 caliber, 44" swamped Colerain barrel, coned muzzle, used, attributed to E. Campbell

Part Number: AAP-690
This lovely flint longrifle is made in the A. Verner - Bucks County style. The rifle is stocked in curly maple, with nice tiger stripe figure, finished to reddish brown. Fitted with a high quality large Siler flint lock, and double set triggers. The rifle is trimmed in brass, with slightly aged lock and barrel finish. Unsigned this rifle is attributed to E. Campbell.

The 44" Colerain swamped octagon barrel is .50 caliber. The barrel has a applied patina, to give it a well aged appearance. The barrel has been lapped and the muzzle coned to facilitate easy loading of patched round balls. A brass blade front sight is mounted near the muzzle and the flat top rear sight is mounted 12" from the breech. Many "older eyes" find this extra distance easier to use.

Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside.

Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels.

Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled .012" to .016" deep depending on caliber, with six "round bottom" grooves. Called "radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost.

Pennsylvania Longrifle, .50 caliber 42" Rice barrel, late Ketland flint lock, curly maple with repair to forend, brass trim, engraved patchbox

Part Number: AAP-804
This classic American flint longrifle captures the style of the Eastern Pennsylvania gun makers. Stocked in curly maple, trimmed in brass furniture, with a Rice straight octagon barrel, and Jim Chamber's late Ketland flint lock. The brass patchbox, triggerguard, and sideplate are hand engraved with a folk art style. The stock does have one repair to the forearm with a glued crack and missing chip.

The .50 caliber 42" by 7/8" straight octagon barrel, by Rice Barrel Company, is finished to a dark brown. The .50 caliber bore is rifled with seven square grooves with a 1 in 66" twist for patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained.

Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in.

Kentucky Pistol .45 caliber 8" barrel, L&R John Bailes flint lock, curly maple, brass trim, by C. D. Walker

Part Number: AAP-822
This Kentucky pistol is stocked in curly maple, stained to a light brown with golden undertones. The brass furniture has a hand burnished appearance and nicely compliments the tone of the stock. The straight octagon barrel and the L&R John Bailes flintlock are finished to a brown with a light patina. As-new unfired by contemporary maker C.D. Walker

The 8" straight octagon barrel has been draw filed smooth and finished to a patina gray brown. The .45 caliber bore is mirror bright, cut down from a rifle barrel blank the bore has a slow twist. The barrel is fitted with small brass blade front sight, a small flat top rear sight is fitted.

Finished to match the barrel, the L&R John Bailes flintlock has a crisp action and a well hardened frizzen. When using our best 5/8" knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-5, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. A stainless steel vent liner is well centered on the barrel, but the lock is positioned a bit low on the barrel. This has put the lower edge of the pan below the side flat of the barrel leaving a small amount of exposed wood on the lock mortise. This wood will be susceptible to charring during firing.

Part Number: AAP-710
This classic American flint longrifle is made in the style of early York County makers. The stock is hard and dense, making it an ideal choice for raised carving. The rifle is trimmed in hand burnished brass furniture, with tight metal to wood fit. The Colerain swamped barrel is finished to a dark blue, the Jim Chambers early Germanic flintlock has been heat blued to appear as a color case hardened finish. Signed by builder R. Faddis this is a fine example of a contemporary longrifle. The rifle appears to be as-new with only a few marks on the frizzen face.

A Colerain 44" swamped .54 caliber barrel serves as the heart of the rifle, finished to a dark blue the barrel nicely contrasts the tone set by the golden brown stain on the stock. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six deep “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost.

The maker's signature, R. J. Faddis is engraved in script, on the top flat of the barrel. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 10-1/2" ahead of the breech. Shooters with corrective lenses or "older" eyes will find the extra distance from the breech easier to use. The front sight is a brass blade with integral base dovetailed behind the muzzle.

With an overall weight of 8.9 pounds and a trigger reach of 13-3/4 inches this rifle was built with today's average sized shooter in mind.

Part Number: AAP-789
This attractive early Colonial era longrifle is obviously of Germanic heritage, but has several distinctly American features. The maple stock, and swamped octagon barrel were features that became popular with skilled German gunmakers, when they came to America. Rifles of this style are typical of rifles produced in or near Christian's Spring, Pennsylvania, during the mid 1700's. This hand finished early style .58 caliber longrifle is trimmed in brass furniture. The curly maple stock is attractively raised and incised carved, and is finished to a dark brown with golden undertones. This used longrifle is signed by contemporary builder Mike Miller.

The heart of the rifle is its .58 caliber barrel. Measuring 44" in length, the swamped octagon barrel is cut rifled with seven deep grooves, in a slow twist, for use with a patched round ball. The bore is rifled with the fancy radius groove rifling geometry, an extra cost option that provides easy cleaning. The barrel is finished to a dark blue with a light aged patina on the breech end from handling.

A barley corn style blade front sight is fitted to the front dovetail. A classic flat top rear sight is fitted forward of the balance point, allowing the rifle to be carried as easily as it is sighted. The large .58 caliber bore, and early style tapered and flared octagon barrel make the rifle balance nicely in your hands, and is very steady to aim, offhand.

With an overall weight of 8.7 pounds and a trigger reach of 13-3/4", this fine early Colonial rifle will properly fit today's average size shooter.
